Dorit Drori exhibits here for the first time a series of black and white photographs of herself she created between 1987 and 2000.
Like in a journey through the time of existence, bond to the circle of life in terms of being born, giving birth, and going back to Mother Earth, the series resumes a searching for an archetypal identity which maintains sometimes harmonic and sometimes dramatic dialogue with Nature, with her inner self, and with the human surrounding.
The self-image, which here is both the subject and the object, the model and the source of its interpretation, bonds itself with her own inner world, with people from distant places or cultures, with the Nature of the near by garden and fields, or with the sensual landscapes of deserts and mountains.
Focusing on a self in meditation over a view of the land of her own biographical roots, the photograph which shows her by the river in Gnungam, Austria, evolves from Romantic traditions.
The images inspire as well the mood of attachment to mysterious and mystic sides of the soul, metaphorically expressed by the ritual surroundings on the Church of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem, or by the enigmatic self image disguised with the Viennese hat, adopting the totem as adopting Modernism and decadence.
